Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a serious condition that affects the small intestine which occurs when there is excessive bacteria in the small intestine. This bacterial imbalance in the gut can cause bloating, diarrhea and pain.

• Causes of Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth can be due to low levels of stomach acid, a weakened immune system, physical abnormalities of the small intestine, or it can be associated with certain medical conditions such as: Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, diabetes, cirrhosis, hypothyroidism or other conditions that can slow movement of food and waste products through the small intestine.
• Treatment of SIBO is treated by doctors by prescribing antibiotics and recommending dietary changes.
